How to Choose a Gemstone Sphere: Size, Stone & Natural Features
Choosing a gemstone sphere is easier when you stop looking for a single idea of “best” and instead compare the features that will actually affect how the piece looks in your space. Size, colour, transparency, inclusions and surface pattern can change the character of a sphere dramatically—even when two pieces are made from the same mineral.
This guide explains the main things to compare before buying a natural gemstone sphere, with examples from our current collection.
1. Start with the size
Diameter is one of the most useful measurements when comparing gemstone spheres because photographs can make very different sizes look surprisingly similar.
As a practical guide:
- Around 40–50 mm: compact, easy to place on a desk, shelf or small stand.
- Around 55–70 mm: a versatile mid-size range with more visual presence while remaining easy to handle.
- Around 75–90 mm: noticeably substantial display pieces that draw more attention on a shelf or cabinet.
The difference is greater than the diameter alone suggests. Because a sphere grows in all three dimensions, an 80 mm piece has much more volume and presence than a 40 mm sphere.

2. Decide whether you prefer transparency or pattern
Different stones reward different kinds of looking.
Transparent and translucent stones such as clear quartz, rose quartz and some calcites invite you to look into the sphere. Internal veils, fractures, clouds and mineral inclusions can appear differently as the piece is turned or viewed under changing light.
Opaque stones such as jasper are more about the surface. Their appeal often comes from bands, patches, colour transitions and naturally irregular patterning that continue around the sphere.
Neither is inherently more desirable. A highly transparent quartz sphere can look clean and architectural; a strongly patterned jasper sphere can feel almost like a small landscape.
3. Treat inclusions as information, not automatically as flaws
Natural gemstones commonly contain internal features such as crystals, needles, clouds, fluids and partially healed fractures. Gemologists use inclusions as useful evidence when studying how a stone formed and whether it is natural.
For a decorative sphere, inclusions can also be a major part of the visual appeal. Hematoid quartz is a good example: iron-rich inclusions create red, rust, orange and golden features within the quartz. Our 79.6 mm Brazilian Hematoid Quartz Sphere is dominated by this internal contrast.
That does not mean every inclusion is desirable in every context. In faceted gem grading, clarity can strongly affect value. But a collector choosing a natural sphere may deliberately prefer a piece with visible internal structure over a clearer but less distinctive one.
4. Look at colour distribution, not just colour name
“Amethyst,” “rose quartz” or “red jasper” tells you the mineral or variety, but not what the individual piece actually looks like.
Colour can be:
- evenly distributed or strongly zoned;
- pale, saturated or smoky;
- broken up by inclusions or veining;
- different under warm, cool or natural light.
In gemological grading, colour distribution matters. GIA notes, for example, that evenly coloured amethyst is generally more highly prized in faceted gems, while obvious colour zoning can reduce value.
For a display sphere, however, zoning can also create visual character. The important thing is to see the exact piece rather than relying on a generic product image. That is why every sphere in our shop is individually photographed.
5. Use several photographs, not just the first one
A sphere has no true front or back. The view can change completely after a quarter turn, especially when the stone contains inclusions, veining or directional colour bands.
When comparing pieces, look through all available images and pay attention to:
- whether one side is more transparent than another;
- how patterning continues around the sphere;
- whether inclusions are concentrated in one area;
- how the stone reacts to direct and indirect light;
- the relationship between polish and natural internal features.
6. Think about where the sphere will live
A sphere intended for a crowded display cabinet may benefit from stronger colour or pattern, while a single sphere on a minimalist shelf can work beautifully with subtler material such as clear or rose quartz.
Also consider the stand. A low ring keeps the sphere visually dominant, while a taller stand gives the piece more height. Whatever you use, make sure the sphere cannot roll if the surface is knocked.
7. Choose the stone for its individual character
For one-of-a-kind natural pieces, we think the most useful question is not “Which gemstone is best?” but “Which individual sphere keeps drawing my attention?”
You might prefer:
- the transparency and internal veils of clear quartz;
- the soft clouded colour of rose quartz;
- the strong internal inclusions of hematoid quartz;
- the painterly surface of Monet jasper;
- or the deep purple tones of amethyst.
There is no need for every sphere in a collection to follow the same rule. Mixing transparent quartz with opaque jasper, or small pieces with one larger focal sphere, can make a display more interesting.
8. A note on care
Different minerals require different care, so avoid assuming that every polished stone can be treated in exactly the same way. For routine dusting, a soft dry or lightly damp cloth is a sensible starting point.
Strong light and heat can affect some coloured gemstones. GIA specifically notes that prolonged intense light can fade some amethyst, while sudden temperature changes can cause damage.
Quick checklist before buying
- Do I know the sphere’s actual diameter?
- Do I prefer transparency, inclusions or surface pattern?
- Have I looked at all photographs of the exact piece?
- Will the size suit the shelf, desk or cabinet where I want to display it?
- Am I choosing the individual stone rather than just the mineral name?
